FAQ

Is EMDR right for me?
Like all therapies, EMDR will not work for everyone. It’s also true that the effectiveness of any therapy is partly due to the client’s engagement in it. So, if you’re willing and open minded then it’s more likely to be effective for you. It also depends on what you want from therapy. So, if you prefer less focus and guidance and more talking then EMDR may not be the best fit and you could consider my talk therapy service.
However, I don’t work with trauma using traditional talk therapy.
-
Is EMDR the same as talk therapy?
No. While EMDR is a form of talk therapy, it’s much more interactive, experiential, and focused. It doesn’t involve talking in detail about traumatic events or other distressing experiences. So, it’s a more gentle approach to working with trauma.
Like other therapies, EMDR is ethical, confidential and works best when you feel comfortable, engaged in therapy, and feel able to trust your therapist. You can find out more about EMDR therapy on my EMDR page or by reading my blogs.
-
Can I afford your fees?
As EMDR is a specialist therapy, requiring additional specialist training, and supervision, it does cost more per session than traditional talk therapy.
However, you will – generally – need fewer sessions than talk therapy to achieve similar results. So, even though it costs more per session it will cost less overall.
If you’re on a budget, a fortnightly session might be possible if there is space in my schedule. Please mention this in your initial contact with me.

What can I expect from EMDR therapy?
Some people find the prospect of processing memories frightening but safeguards have been designed into the process. We don’t just go straight into memory processing without doing some preparation work to ensure that you feel safe and ready. You’re also in control of the process. EMDR is NOT hypnosis and you stay awake throughout.
-
How many sessions of EMDR therapy will I need?
This depends on what you would like to work on in therapy. Generally, single event trauma or anxiety and burnout will need fewer sessions than more complex trauma experienced as a child or adult. Generally, 5-20 sessions is typical.
However, with EMDR it’s possible to focus our attention on specific experiences. So it’s not always necessary to address everything.
A first session should help us to estimate the likely number of sessions needed.

Does EMDR work online?
Yes. Research shows that EMDR works very successfully online. I use specific software for online sessions that allows me to mimic the processing aspects of EMDR. Please also check out my page about online EMDR therapy.
-
What if you don’t have any sessions available?
There might not always be free space, but I operate a waiting list for sessions. And because EMDR is a relatively short-term therapy the wait should generally not be too long. I will be able to give you an indication of availability when you contact me.
-
Do I need therapy every week?
Yes. Therapy is usually a weekly commitment. This is especially true for EMDR therapy where focus and commitment is needed to process difficult experiences. Attending weekly means that you can move through this difficult material and experience the gains from therapy more quickly.
To reduce weekly cost it may be possible to attend fortnightly if I have a space available. Please mention this in your initial contact.
