Trauma Recovery
Guiding you to process and heal the past while staying safe
You may have arrived here because…
You’ve had one or several difficult experiences, either as an adult or as a child. And these have affected how you function now.
You struggle to control your emotions e.g. you might often feel anxious and on-guard or numb and hopeless.
You may have tried other types of therapy and found they didn’t work for you.
Perhaps you’ve developed self-defeating behaviours e.g. overeating or excessive working.
Whatever your reason for being here, I’m glad that you found me. Please read on for more detail about my trauma recovery services.
Trauma can leave you feeling stuck and powerless.
Trauma can happen when your body and mind become overwhelmed by a distressing experience. You can feel powerless because you had no control over it or how you responded to it.
When an experience is overwhelming, our natural ability to process it gets stopped or interrupted. You can end up constantly reliving the experience. So, it’s really common for difficult past experiences to keep you feeling stuck in the present.
It’s possible to become traumatised as an adult due to adverse single events (e.g. car accident, sexual assault, or birth trauma) or multiple experiences where you felt repeatedly threatened (e.g. controlling relationship, narcissistic abuse, or bullying and harassment).
If this sounds familiar: it’s very common to experience post-traumatic stress, even if not diagnosed with PTSD.
Post-traumatic stress is also common if you had a difficult childhood or disturbing experiences when you were a child. Even common experiences like bullying, can feel traumatising to a small person. And can shape your beliefs about yourself and your relationships in adulthood.
But we all have the capacity to heal.
Sometimes people think that because you can’t change the past, you can never shift beyond it. That’s just not true.
I help you develop your capacity to not only feel better but grow beyond adverse experiences, so they no longer dictate who you are and shape your current life. My trauma therapy helps you put these experiences where they belong – in the past.
I work with trauma using EMDR therapy to gently and safely guide your mind and body to process experiences and emotions.
Although I work with trauma in a focused way, I very much tailor the therapy to suit your unique history and needs. And EMDR can be adapted for different types of trauma.
As a trained talk therapist and trauma therapist, I infuse other tools alongside EMDR, including a focus on attachment, parts therapy, somatic therapy, and inner child therapy.
My experiences working with trauma
I’ve been working with trauma for some time now. And I’ve witnessed incredible changes in my client’s lives.
Before training as a therapist, I lived through my own changes too. I grew up in a toxic household. But it took a long time to understand and acknowledge this. In time, and with therapy, I learned so much about how my experiences had shaped me. This really helped me come to terms with the past and develop my own identity.
I’ve seen how powerful therapy has been for clients who grew to realise they weren’t to blame for stuff that happened to them. And I’ve listened as clients told me how their hopes for better self-esteem and future relationships, now felt possible.
